“Right discipline consists, not in external compulsion, but in the habits of mind which lead spontaneously to desirable rather than undesirable activities.”- Bertrand Russell

Good and bad habits are all small daily choices that build up.  Each choice we make merges with lots of other choices to form a solid thread, and this happens while we barely notice.  Simply, at one point in our lives, we notice that we have a good or bad habit, or more accurately, the habit has us.

The majority of choices we make throughout the day are automatic. We don’t even think about them; however, in order to change a habit, we must first acknowledge it.  Afterward, we can dismember the habit into the daily activities that compose it in order to change them and thus, get rid of the habit.

Let’s consider the habit of procrastination, for example.  Many people live their lives putting things off until tomorrow, next week, next month, or even next year, nevertheless, at some point, these people have to face whatever it is they are avoiding, and when they do, they normally find themselves in front of something much worse than it would have been if they had addressed it earlier.  But they do it because it is a habit.

The more regularly you do something, the more natural it feels.  The more one procrastinates, the easier it gets… and vice versa.  If we decide to always act on what we feel like delaying, we will discover that it was not such a big deal, and life gets much easier after that.

Our passion and commitment drive our discipline and habits.  Think about it, you have less discipline, and it gets harder to form a habit when you don’t feel inspired.  The solution is to find paths to enhance your passion so as to get motivated to act.

James Davis hated running in the morning, but he forced himself to do it because he knew it was good exercise.  Of course, this didn’t stop him from complaining to everyone about it. He whined so much that his friends once gave him a mug with “Ten good excuses to not go running”.  But something happened.  For a change, James decided to see the good in running.  He started paying attention to the landscapes he ran across. He gave his attention to the feeling of wellness he experienced after every run while he was showering and to how energized he felt during the day.  He even started talking to his friends about how good it felt to exercise, and he read articles about the benefits of running.  Guess what happened?

James started increasing his running distance, and he started to love running, so much that even after he broke two ribs in a ski accident, he went running with a thorax brace, although it hurt like hell.  You may think he broke more than a few ribs in that accident; maybe he also bumped his head too hard or… maybe he formed a habit.

Passion is crucial in leaders.  A very successful leader, no matter the setting, is one because he or she is in love.  They fix, protect, and create, but first of all, great leaders love.  They love what they do; they are passionate, committed, and intense… just like the best lovers are.
